Thomas Overman

(8 Dec 1679 - 3da 11mo 1761)

Quaker records:
Thomas Overman Departed this Life the 3rd of 11th mo, 1761
Is this death, this man - or is it his nephew of the same name? Online trees give it to both.

Barber stated that Thomas had married Hannah Wiswall, daughter of John and Margaret Wiswall, but added a question mark. Hannah Wiswall has also been suggested as the maiden name of his mother. The following explains that it is highly unlikely either lady was Hannah Wiswall.

The following is why Hannah has been proposed as both the wife and mother of this Thomas.
About 1670 in Boston there was a Thomas Overman, 3rd husband of Hannah Wiswall. When Hannah's father Elder John Wiswall died in 1687, his will named his daughter as Hannah Overman. At the time Thomas & Hannah Wiswall Overman were married in Boston, Jacob Overman was in Maryland serving a 6-year indenture to Richard Gorsuch. Jacob and wife Hannah, parents of this Thomas, were married in Wethersfield - that's two hours by car from Boston - it is unlikely a lady would be married that far from her home. The will and dates also make it impossible that she could have been the wife Jacob & Hannah's son Thomas as he was no born until 1769.
From the Barber manuscript:
Will of John Wisewall/Wiswell/Wiswall who was a propreitor in Dorchester by 14 March 1638/9.
Either this is a very unusual will to name children and grandchildren in such a manner, or the abstract is very confusing. A note says the will was found in Massachusetts Records.... Would certainly be interesting to find.
Will dated 9 Jul 1687; Probate 24 Aug. Bequests to son John; daughter Hannah Overman; daughter Fisher and her children; son and daughter, Cutter; son, Matthew and daughter, Johnson and daughter Lydia Ballard's children; daughter Mary Emans, son [Henry] and daughter Mountfort.
Inventory was filed 14 Feb 1687/88. Mention land in Boston & Dorchester; refers to grandchildren Benjamin Cheney and Jacob & Samuel Royal.
