#8029: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th
ed., Kenton Co. J. A. CRAWFORD was born in Mount Sterling, Ky., June 6,
1818, and is a son of John A. and Dorothy (Fort) Crawford; the former was
one of the oldest settlers of Kentucky, of Scotch descent, and the latter
of Irish descent. J. A. Crawford was educated in the common schools of his
native county, and at the age of sixteen his father placed him in the
circuit court clerk's office, which position he held until twenty-one years
of age, when he bought out the sheriffalty of the county, and held that
office as deputy and principal seven years. He then removed to Carrollton,
Ky., and was appointed cashier of the branch of the Southern Bank of
Kentucky at that point, serving in that capacity for fifteen years, when he
went to Covington, and was cashier in the First National Bank for four
years. While in Carrollton, in 1862, when the war was raging, the bank was
robbed of $94,000, only $45,000 of which was ever recovered. Beginning his
position in the National Bank in Covington, on account of health, Mr.
Crawford opened the Standard Tobacco Works. February 14, 1843, he married
Mary E. Haden, of Montgomery County; her mother was a sister of Matt
Jouatt, the celebrated artist. Six children have been born to this
marriage, viz: Elizabeth J., wife of Rev. Edward L. Warren, of Louisville;
Jennie, wife of W. T. Hanks, a tobacco dealer of Cincinnati; Kate W., Matt
H., a resident of Kansas City, Mo.; John A., Jr., and William H., cashier
in the city custom house. Mr. Crawford is a member of the Presbyterian
Church, and politically he is a Democrat, having formerly been a Henry Clay
Whig.
