Lemuel Holstead

(Abt 1775 - Bef 1850)

Lemuel Holstead of St. Francois Co MO is likely father for Elizabeth as there were no other Holsteads to be found. Deed Book B, p.454, indicates that Lemuel had settled there by 1809 in Murphy's Settlement. At that time this area was Ste Genevieve County, St. Francois was formed from parts of Ste Genevieve, Washington & Jefferson in 1822.

Co of St. Francois I, John Cobb, Clerk of the Circuit Court and exofficio Recorder of said County do hereby certify that the foregoing instrument of writing was filed in my office and recorded on the 22nd day of Oct, AD 1839. Given under my hand and the seal of said Court at Farmington the 22nd day of October, AD 1839. John Cobb, Clerk & Exofficio Recorder

Lemuel Holstead found in 1830 Census in St. Francois Co MO. He was age 50-60. Other males: 1 -5 [Thomas], 2 10-15 [James & Lemuel Jr], 1 15-20 [Benj], 1 20-30, and 1 30-40 . Females: 1 -5 [Emelia], 2 5-10 [Nancy & Amy], 1 15-20 [Polly], 1 40-50 [Nancy]. There are two unidentified older males in the household.

In 1840 Lemuel is on p.60 in St. Francois Twp, St Francois Co. He was now 60-70. The oldest female is still 30-40 [good trick!]. 1m 10-15 [Thomas], 1m 20-30, 1f under 5, 2f 5-10, 1f 15-20. It seems to me that the females could all be off by one column - the ages don't make sense with what is known. Perhaps a married child is living at home with children.

Parents for Lemuel are unknown. There was a Corpl. Lemuel Halstead in Jarvis' Company of the NC Continental Line in the Revolution. He enlisted 5 May 1777 for 3 years. Died 12 Jan 1779. Jolly Halstead, private, also served in Jarvis' Company, enlisting 28 May 1777 for 3 years.
There is a deed in Davidson Co TN which refers to Jolley Holstead.
Vol. C; p.293 11 Jun 1794 State of NC Grant #2418. Our Geneal Assembly passed an act for relief of the officers & soldiers of the Continental line ...bravery and persevering zeal of Jolley Hostead a private in said line. Grant unto William Overall, assignee of said Holstead 160 acres in the County of Davidson on North side of Cumberland River. Begin west boundary of John Thomas preemption; with his line; West sith survey of James Espey; Daniel Williams NE corner and south with his line. East with Overalls line to the beginning. Surveyed for Overall 22 Dec 1792 in consequence of Military Warrant #995, located 22 Dec 1790. Signed 31 Dec 1793.

Lemuel was not present for the 1850 Census. Nancy was living with Thomas and Polly. He had given his consent for Amy to marry in 1845.
