Individual Details

William West

(1752 - 1842)

Jane Lumsden estimated his birth as circa 1752; other researchers say 1758. Her researched had determined that William was the father of John West who married Lavinia Howard, but my research indicates Richard West was John's father as per deeds in Logan Co, KY.

Enlisted in Chatham Co NC to serve in the Revolution. Applied for his pension in the August term of Robertson Co TN Court in 1832. He served under Col. John Litteral, Maj John Griffis & Capt Wm Douglas. Also under Capt Nach, Abram Allen, Wm Gibson, Wm Jones & Col John Malone. He fought in the Battle of Lundy's Mill. [Record listed in Stevenson-West Bulletin in Sep 1962 - however, this listing said he lived in Simpson Co KY in 1781 which is very doubtful. Few settlers were in this area in 1781 and Simpson Co was not formed from Logan Co until about 40 years later. He may have lived in the part of Logan that became Simpson Co. Records also say he died in Simpson Co KY in 1842, living at the time with his daughter Elsie.

William West settled in Logan Co in 1808, land he purchased from John Neely, Jr. He is said to have had a large family and moved to Calloway Co about 1820, but later moved back to Simspon Co. A daughter Ann married Dr. Jesse Milliken. A daughter Elcy (Elsie) married James Milliken in Logan Co. [it is tradition that William lived his last years with James and Elsie in Simpson Co KY]

TAX Records of Logan Co Show the following Wests:
1792 Richard and Amos West
1793 Richard, Amos and Leonard West
1796 Richard, Amos, Leonard and James West
1799 Richard, Amos, Leonard, James, and the first appearance of William West with land on Red River
1803 All of the above with the addition of John West who had one poll between 16-21 [This could be the John that went to Arkansas; he would have been about age 19]
1807 Richard, Amos, Leonard, James, William, John West and the following new appearances of Richard Jr, James Jr, and another William with 12 slaves.
1808 There were 10 men with the West surname this year. Only one William, listed as William West Senr. There was a Matthew, and another Richard. Richard Sr was listed with 348 acres of land, but no poll - was he old enough to be exempt now?
1809 William West with 533 acres. Matthew still there. John. James, Sr & Jr. Richard, Sr & Jr. Leonard and Amos.
1810 Same as 1809 except that James West Sr is missing and has perhaps died. In fact the Estates book lists James West Inventory taken in Feb of 1810 and the Sale of his Estate in March; Susannah West, widow, Administrator.
1811 Richard Jr is now missing from the 1809 list.
1812 Amos & Leonard West not on the list, but perhaps the list was incomplete as they reappear the next year. We have William, Matthew, John, James [Jr], Richard [Sr]
1813 Both Richard Wests again appear, along with William [still had 533 acres], John, James, Amos & Leonard. Matthew is missing but he will be on the 1814 list.
1814 Richard Sr & Jr, William Sr [with 533 acres], first appearance of William Jr, James, Matthew, Leonard, Amos. John seems to be omitted this time.
1815 Richard Sr & Jr. Matthew [now has 533 acres and there is no William Sr], the younger William is present, James, Leonard, Amos, and John West.

25 May 1795. Logan Co Court Order Book 1
Richard West allowed ad quad damnum for a mill seat on Spring Creek - to meet 14 June.

KY Land Grants [Ancestry database] were made in Logan Co KY as early as 1796 to Amos, Richard, Leonard, and James West. Amos & Leonard located on the Little Whipporwill River. Richard & James on the North Fork of the Red River. Not until 1806 was there a grant to John West - 100 acres on the Red River. In 1805,1806, Amos West continued to acquire land - most on the Red River, some on Spring Creek & Terrapin Creek. A Matthew West had grants on the Red in 1805 and Spring Creek in 1807. In 1810, William West had grants for 100 acres on the Red River and 300 acres on the North Fork of the Red. The 300 acres on the North Fork was surveyed 30 May 1810; Book 20, p. 13. The other 100 acres was surveyed 11 Jun 1810; Book 17, p.84. Both in Logan Co.

There is also a Green River grant to William West for 200 acres, surveyed 8 Aug 1799, on the Green River in Warren County, Book 29, p.186

The 1800 Tax list which serves as the "Second Census of Kentucky" shows the following Wests living in Logan Co: Amos, James, Leonard, Richard, and William.

1810 Census - Logan Co KY. Has Amos, Richard, Leonard & William, all over the age of 45 years. A WorldConnect file states that Amos and Richard were brothers who came together with the Herndons to Logan Co [Amos married (1) Frances Herndon]. These families were in Sumner Co TN 1789-1791 as evidenced by tax lists and Sumner Co is where Amos & Frances married on 2 Apr 1791. They are said to be the 2nd & 3rd brothers in Logan Co. Amos had sons named Leonard, James & Richard as evidenced by his will probated in Logan Co on 21 Jun 1819.

William is said to have died in Simpson Co KY circa 1842. He is in the Census.
1840 Simpson Co KY
Household of James Millikin: 1m age 60-70, 1m age 80-90, 1f age 50-60.
Pensioner, William West, age 87.
This would be the household of William's daughter Elsie.

Other Wests in Simpson Co in 1840 were Leonard, age 60-70, with a spouse of the same age, next to Fieldin B. West, age 30-40 with his family. James West was age 50-60 and had a family. Tilman H. West was age 20-30 with apparent wife and two young children.

James West had been present in Simpson Co in 1830 - and was the same age then. If 1830 is correct, this could be a son of William. James "Millican" was also in Simpson in 1830, but had no older man in the household.

In 1850, James Millikin was still living, age 72, b. NC, and living with him was Elsa A., age 68, also born in NC. An online database showing children for William West, does indeed have a daughter for William - "Elsie", born 8 Jun 1782 NC, and died 4 Mar 1857 in Simpson Co KY.
