Mary Dillard "Polly" Harrison

(24 Jul 1783 - Abt 1844)

HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA by Maud Carter Clement, 1929 states that Mary "Polly" was Mary Dillard Harrison, daughter of William Harrison and Anne Payne who had come from Goochland to Pittsylvania Co about 1770. Clement also states that Mary Catherine, daughter, married Christopher Holland. [Actually Mary Catherine was Mary Catherine Walters, daughter of Azariah Graves and his first wife, who was probably a daughter of Mary Dillard Harrison.

The later, Pittsylvania County Virginia Heritage Book, 1767-2004, gives a birth as 24 Jul 1783 for Mary Dillard Harrison and has a second marriage for Mary, to Edmund Richardson in 1811. There is a marriage bond in Pittsylvania Co for the marriage of Mary Harrison to Edmund Richardson, 21 Oct 1811 - they apparently married on 29 Oct. Her brother Nathaniel Harrison was bondsman.

Both the sources state that Mary Dillard Harrison married Azariah Graves. Deeds of gift, 1801, in Pittsylvania Co do show that William Harrison had a daughter named Mary Dillard Harrison. She was a generation older than Azariah. Either there was a Mary Harrison in the next generation or Azariah's wife simply does not belong in this family. Perhaps she was a Dillard and not a Harrison at all. Unfortunately Azariah's first wife was dead prior to 1850 so we have no census image to compare. The 1840 census gives her age as 20-30, or born between 1810 and 1820.

Further information indicates that Azariah Graves Walters most likely married a daughter of Mary Dillard Harrison and Edmund Richardson.
