Anne Herndon

(1707 - 1777)

Anne's surname is often seen as Talbot but this seems to be an error picked up by a hired genealogist who misunderstood information in an old letter. A grandson of Anne & James Lea - John Herndon Graves - married Anne Talbot Slade whose mother was Anne Talbot of Maryland. There is no support that James Lea married into the Talbot or Talbert family.

There is circumstantial evidence that James Lea's wife Anne was a Herndon, but part of this proof is based on a power of attorney in which he states his father was William Lea, dec'd and he was entitled to 25 acres in King & Queen Co. The tract of 25 acres was part of 100 acres in St. Stephens Parish, King & Queen, granted to William Lea 16 Dec 1714. There was in this neighborhood also a patent to William Herndon, Feb. 1673/4 when it was still New Kent Co - an earlier Patent of William "Leigh" adjoined that of Herndon. Later William Herndon's son Edward, purchased another tract in King & Queen Co which Edward Herndon then deeded to his son Edward who was later listed as of Spotsylvania Co. One writer goes ahead to state that William had sons John [married Ann Carter] and James [married Ann Herndon] but then cites the wives of John and James as being the same as the sons John and James of John and Ann Lea. Only one of these can be correct. This perhaps changes the relationships between the Leas but not the fact that they were associated with the Herndon family. Anne, possibly the daughter of the Edward Herndon who went to Spotsylvania Co.

James Lea and Ann his wife sold 200 acres in Spotsylvania Co on 5 Mar 1753. James Lea & Edward Herndon were members of the Vestry of St. Georges Parish, Spotsylvania Co until about 1755.

The name Talbut/Talburt does not appear among the offspring of James Lea and Anne, but the name Herndon does occur. Daughter Nancy named her eldest son Herndon Haralson. Daughter Isabella named her eldest son John Herndon Graves. Son Major named his eldest son Herndon Lea. Use of the name then continues down in the family. To me, this is the most compelling evidence of relationship between the Herndon and Lea families, whether or not Ann was the daughter of Edward Herndon.

Research of the Graves family states that Mary (Graves) Kerr was born in James City Co VA on 26 Jan 1754, daughter of the Hon. John Grave II and Isabella Lea of the Herndon family.

A David Herndon lived in Caswell and Person Counties, dying 1811 in Orange Co NC.
