Jane Lewis

Named in Will of her grandfather.

Jane Lewis Meriwether's 2nd husband has been said to be John Lewis [Byrd], her first cousin. This does not seem to be possible according to the research of the Meriwether Society. Her father's will, dated 1 Sep 1757 refers to her as married to a Meriwether. Land deeds show she was still a Meriwether at least 10 years later. Most of her children by Thomas Meriwether were born during this time. The children of John Lewis [Byrd] were the same ages. Thomas Meriwether lived much longer than is commonly seen - he lived until 1794, dying in Columbia Co GA. He also had a second marriage in 1782 to Ann Durrett, by whom he had additional children. The death ascribed to this Thomas as about 1756 was actually the death of his cousin Thomas, son of David Meriwether.
