Obadiah Smith

( - )

There is no documentation for the marriage of Obadiah Smith to Lucy Poor except for the baptisms of the two daughters at St. James Northam Parish as recorded by Rev. Wm Douglas. Their marriage is listed with those "assumed" by the baptism of a child, 30 Aug 1775.
Obadiah Smith & Mary Burk are on the same list from The Douglas Register - their first recorded child baptized on 23 Aug 1744. Their son Obadiah is recorded as being baptized 7 May 1755 which makes him near the age of Lucy Poor.

This younger Obadiah married Lucy Harris in 1778. Some think this is the same Obadiah that married Lucy Poor and has baptisms of two daughters recorded in The Douglas Register. If that is the case he must have been quite young when he married Lucy Poor and she would have died before 1778. The two little girls were baptized in 1775 and 1776 so this is indeed possible.
Lucy [Poor] Smith, was named as one of the surviving children in the final settlement of the estate of Thomas Poor in 1798. Either the Obadiah, son of Obadiah & Mary Burke did not ever marry Lucy Harris, the Lucy has been mis-identified, or this is a different Obadiah Smith.
