George Bowman

( - )

George Bowman probably came as a young man to Philadelphia where he met Jost Hite's oldest daughter Mary. George & Mary moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with Hite in the early 1730's.

The Opequon, Cedar Creek region was part of Spotsylvania Co when the families first moved from Pennsylvania, but by 1734 it was in the new county of Orange. In 1738, Orange Co west of the Blue Ridge was divided into the counties of Frederick and Augusta - the courts were not organized at Winchester in Frederick Co until 1743, and not in Stauton in August until 1745. In 1772, Dunmore, now Shenandoah County was taken from the SW side of Frederick - George Bowman's home then fell into Senandoah, while Hite's and others remained in Frederick.

George Bowman's will of 1764 names his sons in this order: Jacob, John, Abraham, Joseph, Isaac, and George [George was not the youngest]. Daughters named were Mary Stephens, Elizabeth Ruddle, Sarah Right [Wright], Geaner [Regina] Deyerle, and Rebecca Bowman. There were 11 children still living in 1764.
