Wilbur C. IRWIN

(29 Apr 1885 - 29 Nov 1886)

Birth Records, Book 1; #2005. Parents listed as Catherine (Hay) Irvin and Ira Irvin. He apparently died as a child - he never appears in a census since the 1890 census is missing. By 1900, Ira and Catherine had another son, Charles E., and she stated she had two children, but only one was living.

Rushville Times 1 Dec 1886
Irwin, child-- On Monday last the nineteen months old child of Ira Irwin, of Woodstock was accidentally killed by Isaac Pickle, a simpleminded man who has made his home with Mr. Irwin for many years. The facts as learned from the father are as follows: The child, a bright little boy, slipped away from its mother and went out to where Isaac Pickle was splitting wood in the yard, going up so close to him that when he stooped over, Pickle accidently struck the little fellow in the head with the corner of the ax, cutting a gash in the brain and skull about two inches long, from which the child bled to death in about
five minutes. Pickle immediately picked the child up and carried home to his mother and seems to feel as bad about the distressing accident as he is capable of feeling.

A perpetual calendar reveals that 1 Dec of 1886 was a Wednesday, and Monday "last", was likely the 29th of November.
