Samuel Crawford

( - 1821)

Jenet Mason was the mother of Samuel's children - date given is the date of the bond. But at the time he wrote his will, his wife's named was Mary Elizabeth - online databases suggest her surname was Blacklock. His Will was dated 11 Feb 1818, Ohio Co KY Will Book, p.260-266. He wanted his wife to have the plantation where they lived, also slaves, stock, etc. for her use and benefit during her life. If she has issue, that child should share equally with my sons William Crawford and Samuel Crawford, Jr. and duaghter Peggy Allen, wife of Joseph Allen. Executors to be Joseph Allen of Breckinridge Co and Edward Blacklock and wife Mary Elizabeth Crawford of Ohio Co. The will was exhibited in County Court 12 Nov 1821. His inventory and appraisement of Estate was returned to the court in December.

There were other children born to Samuel & Jenet, as shown in the will of Janet's brother, James Mason, of Botetourt Co VA. The will written 2 Mar 1803. James Mason left tracts of lands to his nephews: William Crawford, Samuel Crawford Junr, and Mason Crawford. He asked that other tracts be sold and the money equally divided between the daughters of Samuel Crawford and Jenet Crawford his wife and my sister: Jane Pate, Eleanor Jennings, Margaret Crawford and Sarah Crawford. He made a bequest of 5 pounds to another daughter of Samuel & Jenet: Mary Pate wife of Edward Pate. He also left a slave to his sister and best friend Jenet Crawford. He specified other lands to be sold and the proceeds to be divided equally among the children of his dec'd brother William Mason late of Kentucky, the children of his dec'd sister Mary Edgar who had been the wife of James Edgar of Bedford Co, and the children of his sister Margaret Snodgrass, wife of Joseph Snodgrass, of Tennessee. He left land to a brother, Joseph Mason, of Kentucky. Executors were Joseph Mason, Samuel Crawford & John Pate of Breckinridge Co KY and Majr. Elijah McClanahan of Botetourt Co VA. The will was presented in court, May, 1808.

Although the will of Samuel Crawford appears in Ohio Co, he was earlier in Breckinridge Co - at least three of his adult children married there between 1799 and 1803.

There is an apparent error also in the marriage date of Samuel and Jenet or the first child was born prior to the marriage. They probably married Jan of 1770, rather than 1771.
