Jacob GABBARD Jr.

(Abt 1793 - Sep 1876)

This is not the Jacob Gabbard I have seen in this place in other databases - the Jacobs have been somewhat confused - but this is the man who belongs here. He is listed as Jacob Gabbard Sr. in Owsley Co KY in 1850 - possibly because he was the oldest Jacob Gabbard in that county at that time. He was born in TN as was Edward; the other Gabbards of this age in 1850 known to be sons of Henry Sr. were born either in VA or NC - that family never lived in TN. The older Jacob, his father as given here, was living with a grandson in Madison Co so would not be considered as "Sr." in Owsley. The Jacob Gabbard, son of Henry Gabbard, Sr. was Henry's youngest son so therefore could not be this man. Henry Sr was in fact living with Jacob "Jr" in Owsley - according to this family, Henry Sr. did spend his later years with his youngest son Jacob. Seems to be the usual confusion over the fact Sr & Jr did not mean in that time what they mean today - it was simply a designation of older, younger; not an implied relationship.

Jacob, son of Jacob & Margaret Smith is said to have married Susannah Bowman. His children are listed by Taylor P. Gabbard as Elizabeth who married Jesse Moore, Cornelius B. who married Mary Moore, Sally who married Stephen Carpenter, Hiram who married (1) Jane Freeman and (2) Hannah Million, Abraham who married Mary Burris, Margaret who married (1) Sam Fortner and (2) Theo Phillips, and William who married Mary Lakes.

There is a Kentucky Death Record for William Gabbard, b. 30 Jul 1836, Jackson Co, KY, died 15 Mar 1914, and names his parents as Jake Gabbard and Susie Bowman. His first wife was indeed a Mary or Polly, but some believe her to have been a Gabbard, not a Lakes.

Abram Gunn assigned his Kentucky Land Warrant #16850, dated 2 May 1827, for 50 acres to Jacob Gabbard for value received.
Survey in Clay Co dated 8 Apr 1828 for Jacob Gabbard Jr. on Sturgeon Waters of the Kentucky river. Begin corner to a 50 acre survey made, for said Gabbard. Chain carriers were Jacob Gabard, Sr and Philip Gabbard. Jacob Gabbard Jr, Markers. Wilie Hibbard D.S. and Felix J. Gilbert, Surveyor, Clay Co.

The following grant is ambiguous as to whether it is father or son:
Feb Term 1837 Clay Co Court. On motion of Jacob Gabbard, the surveyor of Clay Co is to lay off 50 acres of vacant land in Clay Co to begin at the Southwest corner of Henry Gabbard's land. Said Gabbard to pay at the rate of $5 per 100 acres.

George Stivers, Clerk certified that the above was returned to Court, Dec term 1838, and ordered to be recorded in the Kentucky Land Office 31 Dec 1838.
Grant says plainly to Jacob Gabbard Sr. but appears to be Jacob Gabbard Jr. in another, and is dated 21 Dec 1837.

Owsley Co, KY: Jacob Gabbard, age 51, born in TN in 1850, is listed in the Census with Susan age 49, born KY; Hiram age 25, Abraham age 22, Margaret age 19, and William age 13 - all young people born in KY.

There is a young Jacob Gabbard also in Madison Co in 1850 (date of birth matches the Jacob usually seen in this place in the lineage), but he is a son of Edward & Sally Gabbard. He is listed as age 25, born KY; Mahaly age 26; Mary age 3; Nancy age 2; Edward age 1. Lived 4 households away from Edward Gabbard.
