Nathaniel Rose

(27 May 1841 - 19 Jun 1916)

"Nathaniel Rose" by Gratis Comstock in FRONTIER RESEARCH Sept 1986 Vol VI, No.1
Nathaniel Rose and his wife, Mary, with their five children, came to Arkansas from Alabama sometime during the late 1860's, making the entire journey by steamboat.
Their first stop was at Dardanelle, where they resided for one year, coming from there to near Natural Dam, where he farmed for a number of years on what was then known as the Deffenbaugh farm of that community, Deffenbaugh being one of the early day Crawford County physicians.
A few years later, Rose moved to Cove Creek, the post office then known as Eads. In 1893 Cove Creek went on a rampage and washed away the store building in which the post office was maintained. At that time, the acting postmaster was Mr. Rose's son-in-law, J. H. Comstock. when the post office was restored, the name was changed to Rosedale.
Rose had two daughters and three sons. The oldest daughter, Louise, married Houston London, son of M. L. London, who owned the store, gin, sawmill and grist mill which was destroyed in the 1893 flood. Winnie the second daughter, was married to J. H. Comstock, who died in 1940. At the age of 90 years, Mrs. Comstock, now 93 years old lives at Westville. The three sons were Louis, Ollie and Isaac. All children are dead except Mrs. Comstock.
After the marriage of all his children, Rose moved to the Goingsnake Distrist in what was then the Indian Territory, living some ten miles from the present town of Westville. While living here his wife died on election day in the year that William Bryan was first defeated for President. Rose then moved back to his old haunts on Cove Creek where he spent the remainder of his life, making his home with his son Louis.
Rose was a charter member of Cove Creek Masonic Lodge and served several terms as Master. He was a great lover of the Fraternity, often riding horseback to Cove City, the Hall at Natural Dam and Uniontown to visit with these lodges and assist in conferring degrees.
Rose was one-sixteenth Cherokee Indian. His father accepted an allotment of land in Alabama at the time the Cherokees were moved to the Indian Territory, hence was not eligible for rights in the Indian Territory later.
Some of the early settlers of Crawford County with whom Rose was closely associated in one way or another were: H. P. King, first merchant at Natural Dam; James Branson, on of the Republican sheriffs of Crawford County; a Mr. Snyder of Natural Dam, whose son Lee served Crawford County two terms as Representative; W. A. Delbert Brisco an early day Van Buren merchant; George R. Wood of the Shibley-Wood Drygoods Company and later president of the First National Bank, Van Buren; Samuel Cox, a Presbyterian minister, a grandfather of the late Hugh Cox; Tom Comstock, grandfather of the Comstock boys at Comstock's; Bill Henry, an early day blacksmith at Natural Dam; Henry Boy who owned a store and had a water power grist mill located near the Natual Dam across Mountain Fork; J. C. Wood, who began business in Crawford County with a shoe repair shop at Arkalo on Webber Creek near Uniontown; not to mention a host of other Crawford County folks.

Nathaniel served in the Confederate Army, Company C, 10th Regt of 11th Cavalry, Pickett's Alabama Cavalry. Applied for his pension in Arkansas, dated 21 May 1903. An affadavit dated 26 April 1913, was signed by G. M. Comstock, J. P. (Gratis) and J. H. Comstock (Harve).

1900 Census: Nathaniel lived with son "Louis". He and both parents listed as born in North Carolina.
1910 Crawford Co Census: Nathaniel lived with his son Lewis, age 68. States that he was born in NC and his parents in TN - I believe it was just the opposite; perhaps he didn't give the information to the Census taker.
