George Matthew Baker

George said by some to be a gg grandson of John Renta Baker, but that is someone's imagination working overtime. He seems to be of a very different Baker family and the time factor simply doesn't work out.

George Mathew Baker was from Jonesville, Lee County, VA. He grew up near Green Hall, in Jackson County, KY. He married before the Civil War started and had one son James Alfred Baker, who was born January 23, 1862. George went to Lexington, KY and enlisted in the Kentucky Volunteer Army,after 1863, where he served eighteen months in Company A, 47th Regiment under Captain Pennington. George had medical problems and was discharged 12-18-1864.
George continued to live in Traveler's Rest, Owsley Co., KY until 1879, At that time he and his wife Jane (Gabbard) Baker with their two daughters and four sons went to Arkansas where they settled southwest of St. Paul, or near Health and Bidville community in Madison and Crawford Counties. They had another son in 1880. He was born near Winslow, Arkansas.
In 1897 George and Jane moved to Powell, Mo then to Rocky Comfort in 1904. They are buried in Rocky Comfort, MO. (pg 180, The story of Stella and more - 1989)
