John Wilson

(1740 - 1807)



The patriarch of the Wilson lineage is John Wilson, Sr. In the early 1770's he married to Elizabeth Hardin, daughter of Henry and Judith Hardin of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. John Wilson, Sr. died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in January of 1807. In his will he mentioned a dozen children, who included sons James, John Jr., Henry, Martin, Thomas, Asa, Mark, William, and Hardin, together with married daughters Rachel Payne, Artimesia Ragland, and Leah Stamps. Extracts from his will, which was written on December 3, 1806 and proved two months later on February 16, 1807, are as follows.

I John Wilson, Sr. being infirm and sick of body but of sound mind and memory hereby lend to my wife during her lifetime the land and plantation where I now live excepting the parts some of my children has the privilege of settling on, three negros: Will, Tom, and Fanny, house furniture and livestock.
To my daughter Rachel Payne, exclusive of what was given her at her marriage, five shillings, but if she lives longer than her husband, she is to have an equal part of my personal estate deducting fifty two pounds.
To my son Henry Wilson a bed livestock and furniture plus $100 to be deducted when a division of my property takes place. Henry to have the privilege of settling on my land adjoining Reason B. White, without rent.
My son Thomas Wilson to have the place whereon he now lives. He is to transact all my business in the state of North Carolina.
To my son Mark Wilson, a mare and when he comes of age, a bed and furniture, livestock, and some tools, he may also settle on a part of my land.
When my son Asa Wilson comes of age, he is to have a bed and furniture, livestock and may settle on my land.
To my son William Wilson, a mare, and when he comes of age, the same as the rest.
My crop of tobacco and every other property not mentioned be sold and the money divided between my eleven children James, John, Henry, Martin, Thomas, Leah, Hardin, Artimesia, Asa, Mark and William. At the death of my wife, all property lent her to be sold and divided equally between my eleven children, deducting James Wilson forty pounds; John Wilson Jr., forty six pounds; Martin Wilson, forty six pounds, Leah Stamps, forty four pounds; Hardin Wilson, thirty nine pounds; and Aritimesia Ragland, thirty three pounds.
Executors to be James Wilson, John Wilson, Jr., and Henry Wilson.

Thomas H. Wooding and James Soyars provided security for the Executors.
