In that time period the phrase "son-in-law" meant a step relationship, so Isaac was the son of Barnaby's wife by her marriage to Jacob Ricks. Isaac's wife Sarah has often been represented as a daughter of Barnaby because of the phrase, but there is no indication Barnaby ever had a daughter Sarah.
