John was the son of Lewis Snell, b. about 1760, Orange Co VA, died 19 Feb 1820 in Cynthiana, Harrison Co KY. Lewis's will was dated 8 Apr 1819 and filed at Chythiana and names his widow and lists ten children. His widow, Mary, nee Kirtly, received widow's pension of his Rev War service. They had married 20 Nov 1780.

John is said to died prior to 1853, perhaps prior to 1850.
