Joseph Haden Whitsett was 100 years old and one of 12 living Texas confederate veterans. Mrs. Zora Arledge, a relative by marriage had been looking after him for the past 16 years. Whitsett was nearly blind, almost deaf, and used crutches due to a fall off a hay wagon 20 years earlier. He was born Glassgow, KY, 18 Sep 1847 and brought to Bonham at age 5. His father was a physician and Whitsett owned at various times, a mercantile store and butcher shop, he preferred the outdoors. Mrs. Arledge said he never worried about anything or ever did any real work. He was an outstanding volunteer fireman and fine checker player. He had reunion medals from attendance at various confederate reunions. Whitsett had traveled extensively; he had been to Mexico and almost all of the 48 states. Mrs. Whitsett died in 1931 after 55 years of marriage. He related shooting a buffalo near Wichita Falls and he once won a jug of whisky in a dancing contest. Whitsett knew three presidents:; he met Franklin D. Roosevelt at Gettysburg at a reunion of Civil War veterans; he saw Woodrow Wilson in Washington; and he met Teddy Roosevelt on one of his 18 vacations to Colorado Springs. Whitsett named a horse for Teddy Roosevelt, but after becoming displeased with the President, he sold the horse.
