Jeremiah Biswell

(Bef 1767 - 1849)

Jeremiah was born in Virginia but found on the 1790 and 1800 KY Tax Lists: He was in Fayette Co in 1790 and Washington Co in 1800. The family was also in Washington Co in 1810 - they haven't been found in 1820, perhaps had already gone to Missouri. The Biswell children included William, Elizabeth, Thomas H., Richard, John, Jeremiah, Polly, and Henry Norvel. It is said that the brothers bought 1220 acres of land in Randolph Co. The Bureau of Land Management website shows a number of patents issued.

1840 Census. Randolph Co MO, p.285
Jeremiah Biswell: 1m under 5, 1m 5-10, 2m 20-30, 1m age 70-80 [Jeremiah]. 1f 15-20, 1f 60-70 [Mary]

John Biswell was awarded administration of the estate of Jeremiah Biswell on 27 Aug 1847 in Randolph Co, MO

I have information on only the two sons - John and Richard. However, the 1850 Census in Randolph Co, has this household #645 in Chariton:
Norvell Biswell, age 34, b. KY. Lydia, 19, b. IL
William Burrhus, age 8, b. IL
John Monroe, age 14, b. MO
Jonathan Biswell, age 41, b. MO
John Biswell, son of Jeremiah, did indeed have sons named Norvell & Jonathan - however they were at least a decade younger and were with John in this 1850 census. These do not appear to be sons of Richard either.
It is interesting also that they were living next door to a widow, Mary Wright, age 72, b. VA - she does not seem to belong to the known family of Gideon Wright, whose daughter married John Biswell.
In 1840, on the same page with Jeremiah was a Mary Wright with a female under 5, a female age 15-20, and probably herself, age 60-70. That census seems to indicate that Jeremiah had two grown sons, ages 20-30, living with him.
