SAMUEL WALLACE "SANDY" FRY, 90, of Memphis, died October 2, 2005, at his home. For the 12 years prior to his retirement in 1979, Mr. Fry was General Manager of the Memphis Catalog Distribution Center of Sears, Roebuck and Co. His career with the giant retailer began in 1938 and included three years service as Vice President of Sears del Peru, in Lima, Peru. Before joining Sears, he served as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Fry's numerous civic and charitable involvements included board membership in, among others, the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce; the Memphis and Shelby County Safety Council; Junior Achievement; the YMCA; the American Cancer Society; the City of Memphis Manpower Commission; Future Memphis, Inc.; the Memphis Heart Association; the Memphis Institute of Medicine and Religion; the Economic Club of Memphis; and the National Business League Advisory Board. For several years he served as a board member or officer of the United Way of Greater Memphis and was elected president in 1977. He was also a founder/director of Commerce Union Bank and on the Board of Directors of Chickasaw Country Club. In 1979, Mr. Fry was appointed to the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission by then Gov. Lamar Alexander. During his retirement years, he served on the Board of Alzheimer's Day Services of Memphis, devoting much time to fundraising. He worked with Meals on Wheels for ten years. He was honored in 1993 as a Memphis Volunteer of the Year and in 1994 as Senior Volunteer of the Year. Fry was a beloved Elder at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church and member of the Church of Christ at White Station. He leaves his wife, Bobbie Streuli Fry; daughter Sandra Coler of La Jolla, CA; daughter Patricia Godley and son-in-law Gene Godley of Washington, DC; step-daughter Vikki Roberts and her husband Bob Roberts, of Memphis; grandchildren Chad Coler and Jennifer Coler and her husband Alex Nakorchevskiy; and step-grandchildren David Roberts and Dan Roberts. The memorial service will be on October 6, 2005, beginning at 11 a.m.at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church and continuing at the Church of Christ at White Station, with visitation and reception to follow. Burial will be at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, TX. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar has charge. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorials be made to Alzheimer's Day Services of Memphis; Shady Grove Presbyterian Church; or Church of Christ at White Station Activities Center Building Fund.

FRY, SAMUEL WALLACE "SANDY", Age 90, died October 2, 2005, at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. A long-time resident of Dallas, Mr. Fry was born in Ladonia, Texas, attended Paris Junior College, and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1937. Mr. Fry played on the only SMU football team to make it to the Rose Bowl, in 1936. During WW II, Mr. Fry served as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His 41-year career with Sears Roebuck and Co. began in 1938 and included three years service as Vice President of Sears del Peru, in Lima, Peru, and ten years in Dallas Catalog Sales, where he assumed the post of Operating Superintendent in 1964. He was transferred to Memphis in 1967. For the 12 years prior to his retirement in 1979, Mr. Fry was General Manager of Sears' Memphis Catalog Distribution Center. Mr. Fry was appointed to the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission in 1979 by then Gov. Lamar Alexander. Mr. Fry served on the boards of directors of numerous civic and charitable organizations in Dallas and Memphis. While living in Dallas, Mr. Fry was a member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. Upon his death, he was an Elder at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church and member of the Church of Christ at White Station in Memphis. He leaves his wife, Bobbie Streuli Fry; daughter Sandra Coler of La Jolla, CA; daughter Patricia Godley and son-in-law Gene Godley of Washington, DC; step-daughter Vikki Roberts; and grandchildren Chad Coler and Jennifer Coler, and her husband Alex Nakorchevskiy. The memorial service will be on October 8, 2005, at 3:30 PM in the Wildwood Chapel at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas, where Mr. Fry will be buried with his wife of 49 years, Ruth Thompson Fry of Sherman, who predeceased him in 1988.
