Benedict was the first Governor of Rhode Island, under the Royal Charter, granted 1643.

Benedict Arnold's family record states: "Memorandum. My father and his family set sail from Dartmouth in Old England, the first of May, Friday & arrived in New England Jun 24 Anno 1635. Memorandum. We came to Providence to dwell the 20th of April 1636." "Memorandum. We came from Providence with our Family to Dwell at Newport in Rhode Island the 19th of November, Thursday in afternoon & arrived ye same night. Ano. Domina 1651".
The family settled first in Hingham, Massachusetts, before coming to Providence. The went about 1638 to Pawtuxet before settling in Newport.

Benedict married Damaris Westcott in RI on 17 Dec 1640. She was the eldest child of Stukely and Juliana (Marchante) Westcott.
