John Burchfield

(1 Jan 1837 - 14 Apr 1915)

History of Crawford County, Arkansas, by Clara Eno has in Chapter 5 a list of brief deed abstracts. These were apparently compiled prior to the Crawford Co courthouse fire. It's regrettable that she did offer enough information, but her purpose seemed to be an attempt to identify wives.
John Burchfield of Jasper Township and wife Catherine to James Q. Morton, 1859
Archibald Howell and wife Harriet [Burchfield] to James Q. Morton, Burchfield farm on Lee's Creek, 1859
Joseph Burchfield and wife Elizabeth to James Q. Morton, 1859
It would seem these deeds might have been part of an estate and the Burchfield siblings were selling it to James Quin Morton.

Another Pioneer Gone
John Burchfield, commonly known as Uncle John, died at his home at Uniontown, Wednesday afternoon, April 14, after an illness caused by kidney disorder. The interment was made in Uniontown Cemetery, Thursday evening. Deceased is survived by his wife and several children.
Uncle John was 78 years old, and came to Crawford County in 1884, the most of his life having been spent near Uniontown. He served on the side of the Union during the Civil War....
Another article on the same day makes the correction that John Burchfield arrived in 1844 rather than 1884 - he was a pioneer citizen of the county. Mr. Burchfield had a vived recollection of his trip to Van Buren by river and of Van Buren and Crawford County in those truly pioneer days and his friends and acquaintances never tired of listening to him while discussing the very early days of Western Arkansas.

The date of death in 1915, and his age at 78, indicating he was born 1837 - are slightly different dates from those handed to me by a relative. History in Headstones, listing his burial in Uniontown Cemetery gives the dates, Born Jan 1, 1837, died Apr 14, 1915.
