Residents of Mountain View, county seat of Stone County, know how bad war ca be. They haven't any local telephone service and they won't have for the duration.
Glen Hinkle, owner and operator of the Mountain View telephone exchange, reported for induction in the armed forces yesterday. Unable to employ anyone to service the dial system, he received permission from the Arkansas Utilities Commission to close the system for the duration. However, the 745 residents of the town will have one long distance connection.
A direct line to nearby Sykamore will furnish telegraph service. And the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company is expected to install a toll phone in the little county seat soon.
