Services will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, 2:00 p.m., at Mish Funeral Home, 120 Minner St., for Avern D. Maberry who passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 1, 2003, from kidney failure. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Avern was born on April 13, 1919, in Jackson Co., TN. He was preceded in death by parents, Amos Maberry and Ollie Payne, 8 sisters and 3 brothers. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Lucile; one daughter, Peggy Gropp and husband, Egon; two sons, Jim and wife, Linda, and Paul and wife, Nadia. He also leaves behind four grandsons, Curtis and wife, Lisa, Stephen and wife, Rhonda, Jeff and wife, Kate and Brad and wife, Tracy; 3 great-grandchildren, Colin, Abigail and Jane; stepgrandson, Alex and fiancée, Jenny, stepgranddaughter, Lisa and husband, Grant; sister, Mattie Ransom of Gainesboro, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; his dog, Mitzi; and a loving family of Christian brothers and sisters at the Oildale Church of Christ.
Dad married Mom in 1938 and in 1944 moved to Coalinga, CA, where he was employed by Schlumberger Oil Well Services. He was transferred to Bakersfield in 1952 where they raised their family. He retired on disability in 1973 following a car accident.
