Individual Details
Edward Bugbee
(1594 - 27 Jan 1669)
Name also spelled Bugby. Said to have come from Strartfordle-Box at junction of rivers Lee and Thomas: "Bugbee Marshes"- now in London. This place also called Stratford-le-Bow. He embarked for Boston from Ipswich, Suffolk Co., England on the ship "Francis" April 30, 1634, age 40, bringing with him his wife, Rebecca, aged 38 (or 32 acc. another record), and his daughter, Sarah, aged 4. His brother, Richard Bugby, first of the family to come to New England, was with the Winthrop company in 1630. Edward settled in Roxbury, MA, where he joined the church in August, 1665, "an old man", says the record, and when he died 27 January 1668/69, "an honored citizen and church member, aged above 80." His farm was on the site of Mt. Hope cemetery. His will, dated Nov. 26, 1668, recorded at Suffolk County, mentions only his son, Joseph, and daughter, Sarah Chamberlain. He had, however, an elder son, Edward, who received the bulk of his father's estate and remained in Roxbury; and sons, Joseph and John, who were among the fifty proprietors of what is now Woodstock, Windham Co., CT. Bullard and CAA cite these sources: "Genealogical Dictionary of First Settlers of New England", Boston; 1860, Baltimore, 1969?, Vol. 1, p. 280; James Savage, "New England Families"; Vol. II, p.723, Cutter.
Edward Bugbee (or Bugby), "an honored citizen and church member, aged above eighty," died 27 Jan 1668/69. ... In his will, Edward Bugbee made his daughter Sarah, heir to over 1/3 of his property which included 23-1/2 acres of land, "household stuff, cattle and money." Out of this, she was to pay his son-in-law Chamberlin, 18 pounds for his daughters, the testator's granddaughters Mary and Rebecca Chamberlin; "Richard Chamberlin, husband of my daughter," was appointed Executor of his will. No record has been found of any deeds made by Sarah or Richard regarding her inheritance which may indicate that she died not long after this and did not actually take possession of any of the property. Of course, the deeds may have never been recorded. [Source: David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr.].
