John married 28 aug 1858 to Gemima Morgan, daughter of Griffen and Mary Shepherd Morgan. they had five sons and a daughter.

During the Civil War, he was enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant, Company G, 49th KY Infantry. He contracted dysentery and was forced to resign his commission; it is likely he never saw active service.
