Apparently there were serious problems with the marriage between Rosa and Halsey. A newspaper article in the Indianapolis Star in 1912 when Ambra found her family, explained that when Ambra was about a year old, Cassie Davis, later Cassie Norton, agreed to take Ambra and raise her. A family letter that Ambra sent Lula, stated that a friend of her uncle, Frank E. Dixon, before he moved to Ft. Smith AR from Vincennes IN, was able to give her some information about her family.

CHOICE OF HOME PERPLEXES GIRL

Indianapolis Young owman Finds Address of Relatives After 21 Years' Separation
Whether to return to the home and love of her mother after a separation of twenty-one years, or to remain with foster parents who have care for her and learned to love her, si the perplexing problem Miss Ambry Halsey, 2404 Kenwood Avenue has been called on to solve. Miss Halsey yesterday learned the address of her mother, sister, and other relatives for the first time, though she has always know of them, but the joy of her discovery was marred by the thought of a possible separation from the friends she has made and the home that has been endeared to her through the most thoughtful tenderness.
Since she about a year old Miss Halsey has been cared for by Mrs. W. D. Norton, who now lives at the Kenwood Avenue address, having been taken into her home when Mrs. Norton was Mrs. Jacob Davis of Carthage, IN. A short time ago the young woman began to think of her lost relatives and a search was rewarded yesterday when she learned that her mother, now a Mrs. Ferguson, lives in Poplar Bluffs, MO and that her sister, Mrs. Lulu Ferguson, four years and two months older than Miss Halsey, lives near Poplar Bluffs. A happy reunion of the family is expected to be the outcome of the present uncertainties and Miss Halsey may continue her pleasant home in Indianapolis as long as she desires.
FAMILY IS SEPARATED
Adversity broke up the Halsey home when the youngest child, Ambra Halsey was only 1 year old. Mrs. Norton, then Mrs. Davis, came from Carthage, Ind. to Indianapolis, where the Halsey family lived, and agreed to provide a home for the child.
Years brought many changes. Mrs. Norton was married again after the death of her first husband, but the child she had taken remained with her. The girl's parents were separated finally and Mrs. Halsey later married a man named Ferguson and went west, where the daughter shom she had kept with her was married to a son of her second husband.
The details of that part of the family history Mrs. Norton had carefully guarded as something sacred to the girl upon whom she has lavished every attention she could give, and until yesterday the girl was the only one to whom she has ever told the entire story.
When Miss Halsey became 21 years old Mrs. Norton begain ??? to give her an opportunity to choose for herself as to her future life. She had sent ??? including a full course at ??? high school....Miss Halsey has studied extensively at a loca conservatory of music and is a talented pianist.
But Mrs. Norton, true to her own idea of the choice the girl should have, quietly kept in search for her parents, the long years that have elapsed since she had taken the little girl into her home, having effectively blotted out all connections between the two families.
Definite information was obtained through an old friend of the Halsey family in Vincennes. In addition to her mother and sister, Miss Halsey has an uncle, Frank E. Dickson, formerly of Vincennes, who now lived in Fort Smith, Ark. Her father, Ephraim Halsey, when last heard from was in Nevad, Wyandotte Co, Ohio. Mrs. Norton is going to Vincennes today to see the persons who have supplied the information and obtain the definite address.
At present Mrs. Norton said yesterday she can not send the girl to visit her mother, but she will make it possible for them to correspond with each other. Later, if circumstances will permit, some meeeting of the family will be provided.
"But this is her home as long as she cares to stay here and she will continue to have everything we can give her, " both Mr. & Mrs. Norton said yesterda. "Miss Halsey has made a wide circle of very close friends her and we want her to enjoy what advantages she has had just as long as she wants them."
Just now, Miss Halsey, a modest but accomplished young woman, 22 years old, can not adjust herself to the possibilities her new situation opens. She had nothing to say about what she will do until she has communicated with her relatives, but is happy in the assurance of her present home as long as she may want to remain.

Ambra married a minister, Lewis Albert Hurt, spending most of her time in Africa where she and her husband were missionaries. I found the date as 17 Mar 1916 - they were married in Marion County, IN. They had two daughters, Lois Marie and Virginia Ann who was born in the Congo.
