Mary Angell

(4 Oct 1744 - )

Although the Comstock books state that Mary was the daughter of William Angel of Warwick, this, indeed, is highly unlikely if not impossible. Mary was born 4 Oct 1744 in New London, CT, where her family continued to live. She married in New London to Jonathan CHURCH, not Jonathan Comstock, date found in old writings, but not the official vital records, as 13 Feb 1762 and she continued to have children with Church from 1762 until 1797. As Molly, widow, she disposed of his lands in 1801, and moved to New York where most of her Angel family had relocated.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Comstock was living in Smithfield, RI and no record ever suggests he had any sort of connection to New London, CT. He was briefly married to a Mary, as she was named as his wife in a deed between his two other wives, whose marriages are documented. Just as in New London, the marriage to Mary appears to have been missing. Mary also disappears from the RI records after 1778 and Jonathan remarried to the widow Hannah Read by October of 1783. The implication is that his Mary died between those dates .- divorce begin extremely rare in this time period. Either she never had the surname Angell, was a widowed Mary Angell, or was the daughter of a very different person, not William Angel of Warwick and later New London. Early Comstock researchers stated her name and father without any sort of proof documentation and their conclusion was simply carried forward in all subsequent compilations.
