Individual Details

There is a definite conflict in the parents of Mehitable. "William Chamberlain of Billerica, Mass. and His Descendants" states that she was the daughter of Joseph Chamberlain & Mary Johnson, p.144. The date of 29 Aug 1729 of her birth and in Lebanon, New London, is a scant nine months before the next child, John, born in Mansfield, CT. The book was published by NEGHS and apparently sanctioned by the Chamberlain Association of America, no longer in existence. No record of this birth seems to appear. There is the record of birth and baptism of a slightly earlier Mehitable, assumed to have died young, and I have wondered about the possibility they were actually the same daughter.

The World Chamberlain Genealogical Society has the publications of the Chamberlain Association as well as family group sheets compiled by David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., who has placed the Mehitable who married Elijah Benton in the family of Daniel Chamberlin & Elizabeth Brown, and born 9 April 1725 in Colchester Twp, New London and recorded in their town records as a daughter of Daniel Chamberlin.
