George M. Mabry was born in Carroll county, Va., march 21, 1836, and lived near the place of his birth for about 35 years. On November he was married to Miss Elizabeth Monday, of Mr. Ary North Carolina. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Laura Cobb of Vandalia, Mo,, and Mrs. Mary L. Robinson of Arizona.
In 1861 he enlisted in the Civil war and served under Captain Hilton for four years. After peace had been declared he returned to his home in Virginia, remaining there until 1891, when he came with his family to Missouri. He lived on a rented farm for one year after which he bought his home place and lived there the remainder of his life.
He was converted and united with the Baptist church at Vandalia under the preaching of Rev. Luther Bibb. June 14 1906, the death angel visited his home and took the wife of his youth, who had walked by his side and helped so faithfully to fight the battles of life for 47 years, 6 months and 26 days.
In 1907 he was married to Mrs. Ailie Gardner. In March, 1916 his health began to fail and he suffered much until Sept. 19, 1916 like the tired child at play, he fell asleep in death at the ripe age of 79 years, 5 months and 28 days.
Besides two children he leaves grandchildren, many relatives and friends to mourn her death.
The funeral services were conducted at the home by the writer who for more than thirty years has known so well the departed and has been in close touch with the family. After the funeral services the body was taken to that beautiful and well-kept city of the dead at Vandalia. While the friends softly sang 'Let Jesus Lead He Knows the Way" the body was laid in a new grave by the side of the wife of his youth we turned from the grave with weeping eyes yet with submissive hearts and soul, "Sleep on dear father, sleep on we would not disturb thy calm repose, Angels guard thy new made grave and waft thy spirit home to God."
