Individual Details
Mary Jane Harper
(26 Feb 1852 - 31 Oct 1935)
1900 Census says born Feb 1853
I have a picture of Mary Jane, found in an album belong to Bettie (Holderness) Haden. Written on the back, "Mrs. J. F. McFarland, mother of ten when this picture taken".
In 1900 Census she stated she had 10 children, 9 living. There were 7 living at home at the time. Since the youngest was 5, I think the above picture can be dated as taken between 1895 and this census.

Ladonia Pionners - Mrs. J. F. McFarland
Had Part In Early Ladonia History
Mrs. Mary Jane McFarland, on of the most respected and best-known of Ladonia's surviving pioneer women, observed her 83rd birthday at her home here last month. Mrs. McFarland was born in Illinois and came to Texas with her parents during the Civil War, making the long trip, which took over a month's time, over sparsely settled country in a covered wagon. The family passed through the "little towns" of Sherman and Dallas and settled in Ellis County, where they stayed about a year after which they moved to farm west of Ladonia,. Mrs. McFarland, who was Mary Jane Harper, was nine years old at the time.
In 1872 she was married to Mr. J. F. McFarland, and their life together was one of ideal happiness and companionship. Mr. McFarland passed away at their home in Ladonia in 1917. The McFarlands reared a fine family of four sons and five daughters. Two of the daughters, Mrs. H. E. Fuller of Ladonia and Mrs. Tennie McFarland Graves of Dallas, have passed on. Other daughters are Mrs. W (faded and unreadalbe of Plainview, Mrs. Joe M. H (faded), Dallas and Mrs. W. M. Williams of (faded. The sons are S. J. McFarland of Lubbock, Dr. Gordon P. McFarland, prominent child specialist of Dallas, and J. R. McFarland also of Dallas.
Buried in Ladonia Cemetery, Fannin Co TX.
