H e was the last male surv ivor of the early colonists. He was of Sco tti sh ancestry as his grandfa ther, Alexander McCotter (1730-1800), cam e t o America from Scotland wit h his brother, Hugh, who was a shipbuild er i n Philadelphia during the A merican Revolution. Simon McCotter had v is ited Michigan in 1827 but returned to Vermont. He t hen came back in J u ne of 1836 and was one of the signers of the "Union C olony Compact" a n d the "Code of Laws for the Colony." He had been a far mer in Vermont b u t, after settling in Vermontville, became a cabinet ma ker. He did all k i nds of woodwork for the colonists ranging from cradle s to coffins. He a l so worked on homes, barns, schoolhouses, the first s awmill, the Acade m y and later the church. He owned 80 acres of land outside the village o f t he County Line Road ( which is where Ava Tubbs Kroger and her brothe r, L awrence Tubbs, were b orn). He always lived in the village on Lot 6 o n E ast Main Street, but a dded three adjacent lots for a total of 40 ac re s. McCotter is credited with the gingerbread trim that is on the por c hes a nd also for the trim on many of the homes in Vermontville. His w o od wor king tools are on display in the Vermontville Museum. On April 1 , 1 840 h e married Lucy Minerva Leverage and they were married for 53 y ea rs. He d ied on November 15, 1893 at the age of 87 and his wife died t w o years l ater.
