William Reeder Garner

came to Washington DC from Charles Co., Md. He first was a Street Car C o nductor for DC, then owned "Garners" corner market in SW Wash. Later h e s tarted his own Ice & Coal business, serving SW & SE Washington. My a u nts remember that he kept white horses in the stable behind their rowh o use in Wash. & he had several black men working for him. (the y c alled them colored men) He had hopes of converting to refrigeration b u t his sons weren't interested in refrigeration saying that it wouldn't l a st. ha ha. He had a fall from one of the ice wagons and walked with a l i mp for the remainder of his life. He later went to live in a Catholic n u rsing home, in Baltimore, which was arranged by his sister, Sr. Elizab e th Garner.(Daughter of Charity, Emmitsburg, Md.)
