From the original land document: This indenture made the 4th day of Ma r ch in the year of our Lord 1856be tween Lafayette M. Riggs of the 1st p a rt and John R. McCotter of thesec ond part all of the County of Craven a n d the State of NorthCarolina, wi tnesseth that the said Lafayette M. R i ggs for and inconsideration of th e sum Ten Dollars has bargained and b y t hese presents doth grant bargai n, sell and deliver to the said John R . McCotter his heirs and assigns f orever a certain piece or parcel of l a nd (to wit) lying and being on th e north side of Bay River and on the h e arth of Smith Creek Run, beginni ng at the North East corner of improv e ments sold by David Rose to Richa rd Spencer at a Holly thence Noreth t o W est and from that line far enou gh South 45 West to Thomas Lincoln's l i ne, then South 45 East thence No rth 45 East to the beginning includin g t hirty-three and 2/3 acres with a ll and every the appurtenances ther eu nto belonging or in anywise appert aining, and I do hereby covenant t o a ny with the said John R. McCotter t hat I have before the Execution o f t his deed, forthright, absolute, and l awful authority to sell the sa id l and and premises and agree hereby to w arrant andforever defend the r i ght and title of the same to him, the sa id John R. McCotter, his heir s a nd assigns forever, in witness whereof I h ave here unto set my hand a n d seal the day and year above written.
