Individual Details
John Henry Walls
(20 Jun 1874 - 16 Jul 1956)
Going up Big Laurel from Mud River Road, the 2nd house, on the right, is an old log house that Anderson Walls, John's father, built. In this house lived, John Walls, Lonnie Walls and then Gladys Walls. She sold it a few years ago and moved to Hamlin to be close to her son.
The logs in the old house are about a foot square and used to be heated by coal from the single chimney in the house. John used to walk about a half mile every day down the road and dig coal and bring it back in a burlap sack to burn in the house. The mud chinks between the logs had to be replaced every year, to keep the house from being so drafty in the winter.
Before Lon Walls died, he had the outside covered with a light brick looking tar paper to help keep the cold air out of the house. Just below this house as the road crosses the creek on a bridge now, used to be the old Duty Adkins place, though the house is gone now, it still carries the name of the Duty Adkins place. This was where the road entered the creek, and you drove up the creek most of the way up Big Laurel, sometimes coming out of the creek, until you got to the old Hager Post Office & General Store, then it was out of the creek until you got to Herbert & Reber Adkins place.
