Notes
Death
Thomas Starbuck, 35, of 197 Fairdale Avenue, Westerville was photographed being removed from the scene of a head-on collision in the westbound lane of I-70 East which claimed two about 7:15 p.m. Monday, April 6, 1981. Starbuck's father, Arthur E. Starbuck, 74, of 2606 Kingsrowe Court, identified by Columbus Police as the driver of one of the autos, was dead when the Columbus emergence squads arrived at the scene beneath an I-270 overpass. The other driver, Carlos Chandler, 47, of Millersport, Ohio, died at Mt. Carmel East about two hours after the collision. Chandler sustained massive head and internal injuries. The younger Starbuck, a passenger in his father's auto, suffered a broken wrist and cuts in the crash and was in fair condition Tuesday in Grant Hospital. He told police he and his father had been southbound on I-270 and left it on an exit leading to the westbound traffic lanes of the freeway, the senior Starbuck turned sharply left and headed east into the oncoming traffic, where he slammed into Chandler's auto. Police said Chandler was in his far left lane. The vehicles were so heavily damaged that it took emergency squadmen 20 minutes to free the victims. The senior Starbuck retired about 10 years ago from "The Dispatch" composing room.Burial
The funeral services were held at Schoedinger East Chapel with the Rev. Paul E. Bryant officiating.Endnotes
