Individual Details
Adeline Adkins
(1828 - 1906)
Adeline, Samuel, and their family were Union Sympathizers in a strongly confederate area of the country. Because of their beliefs, they were driven from Wayne County, West Virginia. They went first to Ohio leaving all of their worldly possessions behind. They subsisted on the bounty money they were given by their oldest son Charles when he enlisted. After the war, they moved to Minnesota and between 1865 and 1900 they lived in Meeker, Stearns, Hubbard, Todd, and Crow Wing Counties.
In 1881, Adeline applied for a pension and she stated "...We were refugees-having been driven from our home and compelled to leave everything behind-and were almost penniless. My husband and Charles joined the Home Guards...In the Spring of 1865 we came to Minnesota and we have resided here ever since. My husband has been a delicate man for thirty years, and at no time since we were driven from Virginia has he been able to make comfortable living for his family, and at no time since 1862 have I not been dependent upon my own labor for the barest necessities of life."
Affadavits of her statement were signed by Joel Kaylor and by Adeline's brother Hugh Caperton Adkins.
