Fruit, 96, of Lancaster, passed to eternal rest Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Lancaster Care Center Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Hoehne officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. She was born June 6, 1912, in Potosi Township, daughter of James and Louise (Reinke) Belscamper. She married Harold Fruit on Nov. 5, 1932, in Galena, Ill.; he preceded her in death in 1981. Esther and Harold owned and operated the Fruit's Garage in Lancaster, beginning in 1949. In addition, Esther was employed for 16 years as a bookkeeper at the Lancaster Canning Factory and for 11 years at the Grant County Nurse's Office, Lancaster. Esther was especially proud of her German heritage. She loved gardening, quilting, ceramics, crafts and playing euchre and bingo with her friends at the Lancaster Care Center, but most of all, she loved her family. Surviving are a son, Gerald (Bonnie) Fruit, of Lancaster; a daughter, Judy (Allen) Wilkins, of Verona; a sister-in-law, Eulalia Boak, of Blue River; five grandchildren, Tim (Donna) Fruit, of Madison, Jill (George) Marin, of Albert Lea, Minn., Kelly (Earl) MacHenry, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Lee (Josh Rhodes) Wilkins, New York City, and Dr. Jay (Torrey) Wilkins, of Beaver Dam; seven great-grandchildren, Elisha and Suzie Marin, Amanda and Andrea Fruit and Harrison, Ashton and Alexander Wilkins. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Caroline Belscamper; a brother, Louis Belscamper; sisters-in-law, Grace Belscamper and Eleanor Kenny; a brother-in-law, Edgar Fruit; and her beloved pet schnauzer, Penny.
