Charles Frank "Charley" Dobson

(26 Apr 1876 - 6 Nov 1950)

Madison Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, Wisconsin, Wednesday, November 8, 1950, Page 1, Col. 1: Charles Dobson Dies, Not Cousin, 'Potter' Dobson. Platteville--Two village of Arthur residents with the same first and last name who never were mistaken for each other before got mixed up Tuesday morning. They were first cousins, Charles "Chub" Dobson, 74, who died Monday after a six weeks illness, and Charles "Potter" Dobson, who read his own obituary Tuesday morning in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Charles "Chub" Dobson was born in Iowa county, but was a lifelong resident of the village of Arthur. His first cousin, Charles "Potter" Dobson was born in Grant county, never went outside the county, never even went more than 20 miles from his native village of Arthur, he claimed. Add confusion: both have sons named Purl, Purl Dobson, son of Charles "Potter" Dobson, is a barber at Jefferson, Purl Barrett, step-son of Charles "Chub" Dobson lives in Muscoda.

Funeral services for Charles "Chub" Dobson will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Thomas funeral home, Platteville, with the Rev. R. J. Fleming, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Charles "Potter" Dobson hasn't said for sure whether he will attend.
