Porterville Evening Recorder, Tuesday Dec. 17, 1946, page 1: Roy McCance, Forest Worker Dies Suddenly. Roy Charles McCance, 52, a veteran of World War I and employed for many years by the Forest Service, passed away suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home on Henderson Drive. He had not been in good health for some time, but had continued with his work in construction and maintenance on the Sequoia National Forest. Yesterday morning Mr. McCance was taken ill while at the Fulton Ranger Station in the Greenhorn Mountain country. He was driven to his home here by a fellow worker. Later in the afternoon, he suffered a stroke and death followed. Mr. McCance, a native of Cozad, Neb. began working for the Forest Service in 1927 and had spent practically all of his time on construction of roads and bridges. His official title was construction and maintenance foreman. He came to Porterville from the Shasta National Forest in February, 1944, where he had been on a war mapping assignment, and took charge of construction and maintenance on the Western divide district of this forest. During his work with the Forest Service, he had been employed mostly in the California region. He was a member of the local post of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Maude McCance; two sons, Charles McCance, Porterville, and William Ransden, Buttonwillow; two daughters Mrs. Patricia E. Ellis, Fresno. and Mrs. Sophronia Petersen, Burbank; a brother, Earl McCance, Palm Beach; and six sisters, Mrs. Audie Wofford, Fresno; Mrs. Mabel Smith and Mrs. George Thomas, San Francisco; Mrs. Leonard Camp, Central Point, Ore.; Mrs. Cecil Ristine, Gothenburg, Neb.; and Mrs. Bert Snyder, North Platte, Neb.; and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Loyd-Brittell Chapel and will be announced later. Funeral services and burial will be at Fresno.
