Lawrence Eugene McCarty

The Manhattan Mercury, Manhattan, Kansas, September 26, 1997: Lawrence Eugene McCarty, 68, Marina, Calif., formerly of Manhattan, died of Merkle cell cancer on Feb. 14 at the Hospice House of Monterey. A 1950 graduate of Kansas State University and longtime Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity member, he had worked in insurance sales for 40 years, owning and operating several agencies in California and Kansas, including in Manhattan and Junction City. He also served in the Air Force. Among his memberships, he was a former member of the Manhattan Eastern Star, the Chamber of Commerce, and a lifetime member of the KSU Alumni Association. He was a financial supporter of the women's and men's basketball programs and the football program at KSU. He also started the Manhattan Downtown Men's Group of Alcoholics Anonymous. Survivors include three daughters, Laurie McCarty and Nancy McCarty-Borden, both of Sacramento, Calif., and Martha Browning, Los Angeles; a son, Clyde Parker McCarty, Sacramento; three sisters, Donna McCray, Overland Park, Marge Peachey, Chatsworth, Calif., and Wanda Bates, Gettysburg, Pa; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Mound Valley Cemetery, Mound Valley, Kan. Memorials can be made to Children of M.O.V.E., 3412 1/2 Winslow Dr., Los Angeles, Calif. 90026. The privately funded program supports severely disabled children.
