Wilber Howard "Bill" Kirkpatrick

Obituary from unknown Labette Co., Kansas newspaper. Wilbur H. "Bill" Kirkpatrick, 75, of Oswego died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997 at his home after an illness. He was born Nov. 11, 1921, in rural Oswego to Shelly and Henrietta (Snook) Kirkpatrick. He grew up at Oswego, graduating from Oswego High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, Umnak Island and Anchorage, Alaska. He married Esther Strickland May 24, 1944, at the Oswego United Methodist Church parsonage. She survives of the home. Mr. Kirkpatrick worked for the U.S. Postal service for 33 years. He retired in October 1977 as a supervisor. He also had worked part time for Trotnic Lumber Co., Of Oswego. He was a charter and 50 - year member of the Bryant-Sykes Post 3399 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Oswego, serving as post commander 1949-1950, as quartermaster for 17 years and was in charge of the post's hospital equipment loan program for many years. Mr. Kirkpatrick served as treasurer of the Oswego Serviceman's Club, the Avenue of Flags and the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. He was a past president of the Oswego Golf Association. He was a member of the Oswego United Methodist Church and had served on various boards and committees. He enjoyed golf, hunting and watching basketball and football games. Other survivors include a son, Randy of Oswego; a daughter, Carol Pollaro of Las Vegas, Nev., two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. A sister, Shirley Ann McCarty, preceded him in death. The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Oswego Untied Methodist Church with the Revs. J. Ray Swearingen and Paul Wiand officiating. Burial will be in the Oswego Cemetery with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 3399. The family will received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Murdock Funeral Home of Oswego. The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church of Oswego or the St. John's Hospice of Oswego.
