The Helena Daily Independent, Helena, Montana, Wednesday, January 21, 1925, Page 6, Col. 1: Man Who Founded Sidney Is Called; Came Here In 1900. Sidney, Jan. 20---Edgar A. Kenoyer, 45, one of the old-timers of this section, died here Sunday, the cause being an advanced case of appendicitis, erroneously thought to be indigestion until too late for surgery. Mr. Kenoyer, twice mayor of this city and for ten years the president of the school board during the years of the building and development of the local system, came to the lower Yellowstone valley 25 years ago from South Dakota, riding a bicycle and leading a horse, there along with a normal education being his only stock in trade.
Bought It for Song. From the man who had purchased the land from the Northern Pacific Land company at 75 cents an acre, Mr. Kenoyer purchased for $4 an acre the farm on which the townsite of Sidney is now located or rather took the railroad contract off the other's hands. In a few years the government decided to build the lower Yellowstone irrigation project and there was an opportunity for the location of a townsite. Kenoyer surveyed a part of his farm and set up the little town of Sidney, located in the center of the new project. In all of the development of the valley Mr. Kenoyer was closely identified. But a few short weeks ago, a part of the original farm, now in other hands, was sold to the Holly Sugar corporation at around $100 an acre, although admittedly worth more money.
