William Waits Gillham

Jacksonville, April 20---William Waits Gillham passed away at 12:10 o'clock this morning at his residence, 910 West State street. For several months he had been in failing health but not until Sunday did he become critically ill.

Mr. Gillham owned the Gillham Funeral home here. He was one of Jacksonville's most prominent citizens. Mr. Gillham was born Jan. 9, 1872 fifteen miles west of Jacksonville. He was a son of William A. and Rebecca Waits Gillham.

He attended the public schools here and later he graduated from Eureka college. He then attended the United States School of Embalming in New York. In 1896 he went in partnership with Mr. Barton and established an undertaking business at Winchester. In 1898 Mr. Gillham moved to Jacksonville and opened an establishment here. Mr. Gillham married Evan Davenport of this city, Nov. 27, 1901. Surviving the decedent are his wife and five brothers and sisters. They are Mrs. J. B. Gordon, Seattle, Wash.; Miss Martha Gillham, Jacksonville; J. E. Gillham, Winchester; J. W. Gillham, Scott county, Ill., and J. L. Gillham, Manchester.

Mr. Gillham was affiliated with the A. F. & A., Hospitaller Commandery, No. 31, Knight Templar; Jacksonville Council No. 5, Royal and Select Masters; Jacksonville Chapter, No. 3, R. A. M., the Consistory at Springfield, the Zingabad Grotto of this city; Illini Lodge No. 4, L. O. O. F.; K. of P. Lodge, No. 152; M. W. A. Lodge, No. 912; D. O. O. K. Lodge, No. 62, and Delaware Tribe, I. O. R. M. He also was a member of the Jacksonville Rotary club. Mr. Gillham was a deacon of the Christian church here.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the residence, Dr. M. L. Pontius officiating. Interment will be in Diamond Grove cemetery.
