John Joseph Kirkpatrick was born 15 September 1852 in York District, South Carolina. In 1856 he moved with his family to Walker County, Alabama. There he married Eliza Blackwood, who was born in 1851 in Jasper, Walker County, Alabama.

There were seven (7) children born of the marriage.

On the 1900 U. S. Census of Good Springs, Walker Co., Alabama Joseph and Eliza Kirkpatrick appear with their children. William J., Samuel B., James R., Bamma, Alta, Elizabeth and Carl S. Joseph and his 3 older sons are farmers. Joseph and Eliza have been married 20 years. She is the mother of seven all of whom are currently living.
