Frank F. Kirkpatrick Jr.

Rutland Herald, Rutland, Vermont, Friday, July 2, 2010. PERU, Vt. - Frank Kirkpatrick, 86, died on June 29, 2010, after a brief illness. Mr. Kirkpatrick was born in New York City on January 12, 1924. He was the son of Frank and Mary (Treacy) Kirkpatrick.

Mr. Kirkpatrick was enrolled in The Collegiate School in New York City and later attended The Governors Academy in Byfield, Mass. In 1945, he graduated from Yale University. Early in his career, he worked as a copywriter for Macy's in New York City where he met fellow copywriter Nancy Duffy, his future wife and lifelong partner. They were married on September 6, 1947, in Riverdale, New York. Later, Frank's career as an ad-man flourished working for such notable agencies as McCann Erickson, Young and Rubicam, as well as Needham Harper and Steers. During those years, he raised his family in the lovely confines of Hartsdale and Scarsdale, New York.

In 1977, Frank and Nancy moved to Peru, Vermont, and purchased the J.J. Hapgood Store which they ran for 20 years. Mr. Kirkpatrick enjoyed traveling with his wife. He was a painter and writer. He authored a number of books on owning and operating a country store including "How to Purchase a Country Business." He was a guest on NPR's "All Things Considered" and along with Nancy, had a cameo appearance in the movie, "Baby Boom."

Mr. Kirkpatrick is survived by his wife, Nancy (Duffy) of Chester; two sons, Timothy of New York City and Gregory W. of Raleigh, N.C.; three daughters, Treacy Kirkpatrick of Washington, D.C., Cary Handler of Newburyport, Mass., and Amy Dupuis of Glastonbury, Conn.; and five grandchildren.
