The Montrose Daily Press, Montrose, Colorado, Thursday, February 12, 2009: MONTROSE - Harold Wayne "Hal" Clason, age 78, passed away at Montrose Memorial Hospital on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009. Hal was born March 24, 1930 to Oren C. and Elsie "Pansy" (McCray) Clason. Hal grew up in La Junta, Colo., along with seven brothers and two sisters. After graduating from high school, Hal was a fireman on the Santa Fe Railroad, which instilled a lifelong interest in the railroad and trains.

Hal served his country during the Korean Conflict as an enlisted member of the United States Navy on board the USS Bon Homme. While he was in the Navy he began his career as a photographer. After his honorable separation from active duty, Hal earned his master's degree in photography from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. From Pepperdine he went on in a professorial capacity to teach nature photography at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, Calif.In addition to his passion for nature photography, he also loved photographing trains. In his spare time, Hal enjoyed working on cars and spent time woodworking. He loved being outdoors camping. Hal was a member, while in Santa Barbara, of the Masonic Lodge. He always made a special carrot cake which he made sure to bring to all family gatherings.

Hal is survived by his children, Michael Clason of Norwood; Kate (Frank) Clason Messina of Bend, Ore.; his sister, Betty Bridges of Montrose; and three grandchildren. Hal was preceded in death by his parents and seven of his brothers and sisters.

A memorial service in honor and celebration of Hal's life will be officiated by Pastor William S. Bishop at Valley Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. Valley Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Hal and his family, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970)249-4400.
