Born in Duncan, Oklahoma, she graduated from Barnard College, earned a doctorate from Columbia and was a political science professor at Georgetown University from 1957 until her appointment by President Reagan in 1981 as ambassador to the United Nations. There she was known as a blunt advocate for American power during the Cold War. She remained involved in public issues for over two decades after leaving government in 1985. Early in her academic career she was a Marxist and joined the youth section of the Socialist Party of America. Later she referred to herself as a lifelong Democrat but eventually switched to the Republican Party in 1985 after giving a speech in which she castigated the Democrats at the Republican National Convention that nominated Reagan for a second term in 1984. She later considered seeking the Republican presidential nomination that went to George H. W. Bush in 1988.
