Arnold Stanley Lundeen

(10 May 1940 - 7 Nov 1961)

The Flathead Courier, Polson, Montana, November 9, 1961, Page 1, Cols. 7 & 8: Arnold Lundeen Fatally Injured in Auto Accident. Funeral services for Arnold Stanley Lundeen, 21, who was fatally injured in an auto accident on Highway 35, a miles south of Bigfork early Tuesday will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the Retz Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Ronald Stabbert, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Polson. Burial will be at Lakeview cemetery.

According to County Coroner Sol Catron, Lundeen, driving at a high rate of speed, apparently attempted to miss something "probably a deer, " and lost control on a curve. His vehicle skidded for 140 feet, rolled twice and slid to a halt still on the blacktop. He died with a broken neck.

Lundeen, recently discharged from the U.S. Navy, was following his father at the time of the 5:45 accident. The elder Lundeen, several miles ahead, was unaware of the crash.

Catron said that a recently killed deer was found several hundred yards from the scene of the fatality, but that there was no indication that the Lundeen vehicle struck it. Catron said that Lundeen's fatal injury was sustained when his body was thrown about in the interior of the rolling car.

The Lundeen youth was born May 10, 1940, at Hot Springs, S. D., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Lundeen, who survive him. He was a Polson high school graduate and had served in the U. S. Navy. He was single. Survivors besides his parents include two brothers, Roy and Lester Lundeen, and two sisters, Virginia and Janice.

Inscription: FT 2 US Navy.
