Earl Samples

Southern Illinoisan, Carbondale, Illinois, Sunday, January 14, 1996: Mulkeytown---Earl Samples, 66, of Route 2, died at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 1996 at his home. Mr. Samples was born Aug. 31, 1929 in Plumfield, to Luther and Oralee (Edwards) Samples. He married Ginny (Kirkpatrick) Bowlin on Nov. 14, 1958 in Zeigler. She preceded him in death April 23, 1993.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and William Robinett of St. Louis and Diane and Kenneth Utley of Christopher; three sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Lee and Joann Bowlin of Christopher, Lyle and Mary Bowlin of Elkville and Hobart and Debbie Bowlin of Collinsville; a sister, Lucille Dixon of West Frankfort; three brothers, the Rev. Max Samples of Springfield, Dearl Samples and his wife, Virginia, of Cambon Lake; Beecher Samples and his wife, Bessie, of West Frankfort; several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, D.J. Samples.

Mr. Samples was a member of the Third Baptist Church in West Frankfort, the Christopher American Legion Post 528; the Disabled American Veterans of Franklin County, 51 Life member. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and received the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. He was a retired coal miner who last worked at Waltonville in 1986 and was a member of the UMWA Local 9111.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with the Rev. Max Samples officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at the Zeigler Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
